LuLu Kellogg: The Coastal Sisters

DARK ARTIST OF THE EQUINOX
Lulu Kellogg was the artist of the month in our newsletter, however, we do not choose many artists... so it is more proper to say equinox instead of month.
Lulu was chosen for this distinction because of her incredible support and generosity of the Dark Artists Guild as well as her participation.

Do you have an occupation other than Artist?

I am a full time Artist.

Are you married, single, children, pets etc? Whatever you want to tell us...

I have been married for 3 years to my husband currently serving his last Tour of Duty in his 37th year in the United States Army. We have 6 children between us and share our home with our 5 dogs. I am also a cancer survivor and have now been in remission for almost 20 years.

Would you make a list off the top of your head about things you are passionate about?

Art, music, Cancer research, animal rights and bringing our military troops home.
Would you consider yourself spiritual and does it influence your work? Can you explain?

I am definitely a spiritual person but I never really thought about it influencing my work.

What is your earliest memory of creating art?

My earliest memory of creating art was working with paper mache at age 7.

Did you attend art college?

I have no formal training in the arts. Prior to becoming a full time Artist, my background was in Law and Non-Profit work.

Where do you see digital art heading in the future?

I feel that this area of artistry will continue to be used by more and more Artists in all different mediums.

What is your philosophy about art world in general?

My belief about the art world in general is that there is so much to be learned from each other as Artists and even though we don’t all see art in the same way.

What is your definition of dark art?

My definition of Dart Art is art that is created in different techniques and styles that show the absence of brightness.

What are your limits in your expression of the dark side?

I don’t believe I have limits in my expression of the dark side of things. I strive to learn more and more of this side of art that fascinates me, especially through other Artists.

When did you first become interested in art? Did you go to classes, attend workshops?

I first because interested in art after seeing the works of Tim Burton and Edward Gorey. I never took any art classes in grade school or college and never attended any workshops until about 6 years ago. I am a late bloomer to the art world so to speak.

What artists do you admire? Which one has had the most influence on you?

My sister, Lisa, Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Christopher Klinger, Vanessa Valencia, Melissa Valeriote and of course, all of my fellow Artists in the Dark Artists Guild that constantly inspire me. The one that has had the most influence on me has been Edward Gorey.

What common mistakes do you see artists making these days?
I honestly don’t think there are mistakes made in art. I consider them learning experiences.

From your experience, what is the best advice you can give fellow artists?

There is a quote by another Artist that I love and this is my best advice….”To those that aspire to be an Artist, just be one. To those that are an artist, be a friend” – Wendy Prentice
